Barry Shortt, PhD

Dr. Barry Shortt is the Business Development Manager at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT). In this role, Barry leads strategic partnerships, global client engagement, and the expansion of NIBRT’s education, training, and consultancy offerings. He works closely with biopharmaceutical companies, governments, and workforce development agencies to design impactful training programs and long-term collaborations that address skills needs across the global bioprocessing sector. Barry holds a degree in biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in mammalian protein trafficking from the University of Sheffield. He completed postdoctoral research at the University of Basel alongside business administration studies at the University of Leicester. Prior to NIBRT, Barry served as Vice President at Brand Institute in Basel, where he advised leading pharmaceutical companies on product branding, regulatory strategy, and market implementation across more than 150 projects. He later joined CMAB Biopharma (now WuXi Biologics) as Senior Director of Global Market Intelligence, supporting European business development and competitive strategy.
